After a few weeks off of writing due to all the technology debacles I discussed last week, I’m definitely back in the saddle. I pounded out about 10k words this weekend, making a short story into novella length and I’m still not done. Life is good when the words are flowing….
As you know, every week the very talented Sandra Bunino hosts the Mid-Week Tease where several amazing authors share a snippet of a new release, a backlisted titled or a WIP. Aside from having the opportunity to share a little part of my own work, I get to hop from site to site reading other authors’ works. It’s a lot of fun!
Last week, I had the pleasure of introducing you to Derek and Raina. If you missed that post, check it out here. This week I’m going to let you see just how bold and crazy these two are for each other. The below scene takes place in one of the firm conference rooms. Derek has asked Raina for some help on a case and she has been more than happy to oblige… of course. Raina isn’t your damsel in distress! She’s a modern woman that isn’t afraid to ask for what she wants! Enjoy!
“Were you able to get through the whole Jenkins file?” Leaning over her shoulder, he watched her rifle through a few documents in a manila folder. Her vanilla scent wrapped around him and instantly stirred his cock.
God damn this woman!
“I’ve reviewed the file, Mr. Sage,” she said, tilting her head to the right and exposing the length of her neck to him. She eyed him over her shoulder and her mouth quirked up on one side. His teeth dug into his lower lip to keep from running his tongue along the column of creamy skin. He desperately wanted to taste her there. He extended his exhalation, causing his breath to drift over her skin and she shuddered. Fuck! He needed inside of this woman…soon or he was going to lose his mind.
The firm would not necessarily oppose a relationship among two attorneys despite what had happened between him and Rachel. There had been one or two other couples that had seemed to work it out.
Up until this point, he just preferred keeping his love life, or should he say sex life because love had never entered the equation since Rachel, separate from his legal career. He’d thought it was better that way. Cleaner. He didn’t have a lot of time to devote to a relationship and he wanted to keep his heart in one piece, so he tried to keep his connections casual… and away from the office. He’d done pretty well up until now.
“I told you yesterday to call me Derek,” he said. The playful look in her eyes told him she was toying with him.
“I apologize.” She lowered her lashes and turned back to the table. His hands clenched into fists to keep from reaching out and touching her. The urge to pull her head back by her long hair and slam his mouth on hers was so strong he almost forgot to breathe.
“Apology accepted,” he said, using her words from the night before. He pulled back from his position over her shoulder and closed the conference room door. He walked around the conference table to sit opposite her. Putting some distance between them was a good idea because he was so close to pulling her from her chair and spreading her across the dark wood conference table. He may still do that anyway. “Your thoughts?”
“My thoughts on the Jenkins file?” She paused and raised her head to look at him with those gorgeous honey colored eyes. “Or this obvious attraction between the two of us?”
A small laugh escaped him. “Bold. And to the point, even at seven-thirty in the morning,” he said. “I like it.” He leaned back in the leather chair and crossed his right foot over his left knee. His hands folded in his lap. “Let’s talk about the more interesting of those two questions first. So, you find me attractive?” It was her turn to laugh.
“Yes. Very much. Don’t all females?” She leaned on her forearm on the table and Derek couldn’t stop his gaze from traveling down to the cleavage so elegantly displayed between the gap of her brown suit jacket. A low growl rumbled through him.
“I’m not asking about all females. I’m asking if you do.”
“Yes, I do find you attractive.”
“And I think I’ve made it too obvious that I’m attracted to you. What do you propose we do about this attraction?” he asked, bringing his gaze back to her eyes. She pulled her bottom lip between her teeth and his resolve just about snapped. He’d fantasized more than once over the last twenty-four hours about doing all sorts of things with her mouth. Watching her gnaw on her plump lower lip had his cock pressing against his slacks.
“I’d say we have two options.” Her lips curled up into a grin begging him to ask her about the options. To be honest, he was eager to hear them.
“I’m listening.”
“I can help you with this case and we can try to pretend it doesn’t exist,” she said, not sounding too convinced that that option was actually doable and quite frankly, neither did he. He could barely think straight this morning and he’d only been in her presence a total of ten minutes yesterday. How could he function for the next several days working with her on this case? “Or we can fuck and get it out of the way, so we can focus on the Jenkins case.”
“Come again?” he asked, taken aback by her brashness. He’d admit she caught him off guard, but he liked it. Screw that! He loved it.
“I think you heard me,” she said. A mischievous smile played on her lips. “And I vote for option two.”
“I’m harder than stone right now, Raina, and on the very edge of crossing a line I’ve said I wouldn’t cross,” he growled. His erection strained against his black slacks and he was sure the only acceptable relief would come from being buried inside of her. “I don’t have sex in the office and I don’t fuck co-workers, but you’re making me question both those rules.”
Does Derek break his rules?!?
I hope you enjoyed a little more of Derek and Raina. I’ll admit… this story started out as a little short story that I thought I’d submit to an anthology and has turned into an exciting romance. She’s not backward about what she wants, is she? I bet he will break his rules. Great snippet. :_
Oh, I do love a woman who knows what she wants, and is not afraid to voice that. Derek stands no chance of resisting her, I reckon 🙂
He better break his rules and right now. Fun characters, Jessica. I can see why you’re enjoying them. 🙂
Great teaser 🙂
